Collage of all the wonderful pictures I took summer of 2013 |
Summer of 2013 was crazy for me! I went tot he Dominican Republic for a little over a month and it didn't turn out as well as I imagined (it never does).
Emergency Room Scare
About a week before I left I started having this weird pain on my left breast, me being the paranoid/curious person that I am decided to Google something that might be wrong with me. Of course things like disease and rare breast cancer came up. I was basically rethinking my life at this point, I was only 14! I decided to go to the emergency room, after a very awkward check up and talks about my recent activities with the nurse, he just gave me antibiotics and recommended a check up with my regular doctor just in case. Fast-forward a week, I got more antibiotics and a mammogram done. Turns out it was just a cyst with infectious liquid inside. Even after over 7 doctor appointments in just 5 days, I finished all the test just in time for my flight that Sunday.
Lost Luggage
A few days after I got to the Dominican Republic my aunt asked me to go to her house in the capital which was 4 hours away from Francisco de Macoris, where I was staying. Me and my cousin were taking a Caribe tours bus over there the next day. My Grandfather drove us the stop, and we boarded a few minutes after. there was a lot of people so my cousin put in our luggage into the bottom of the bus while I grabbed us 2 seats. We started our trip after about half hour of customers complaining the bus being too full. I go to sleep and about 30 minutes after we get on the road I hear a lot of screaming and wake up. Apparently some luggage had fell out of the bus and some kid was banging on the front of the bus for the driver to stop. he eventually stop and the kid that spotted his luggage falling out got off and was walking to where the luggage fell. After about 20 minutes he came back with one suitcase. Everyone figured he found what he needed and we kept on going. I really hate buses so I felt extremely sick the rest of the way. We were suppose to get to the capital at 3 pm and we got there around 5:30 pm. we got off the bus and my aunt and her husband were waiting. while I talked to my aunt about what happened her husband went to get me and my cousins luggage and came back empty handed. We went to check the bus again, nothing... the only thing that was there was my cousins roller blades. our luggage had fallen out with the kids suitcases. We were crying and we wanted to talk to the manager. We stood in a room writing down what we lost on paper with about four other people, including the kid that stopped the bus, apparently he had lost another suitcase. We went to get something to eat the mall afterwards but I threw it up, once we got home. The next day my grandfather sent me the remainder of the clothes that I left at the house, which wasn't much, to the capital on another Caribe Tours bus. The rest of the week I stayed in the capital, it was the worst week of that summer, I just wanted to go back to New York. I stayed awake all night and slept for most the day, so the days went by quickly. I went to a few places, around the city. We rented bikes and got on trampolines, I even visited Pinkberry, which I was so excited to visit because it the only one in the country. After I got back to the house in San Francisco de Macoris, I seriously had never been happier. My mom had sent me a suitcase full of new clothes, for the rest of the summer. I was just happy to not have to depend on anyone else like what I had been doing with my aunt that past week. That was what made the week so depressing.
The Rest of It All...
The rest of the summer was nothing compared to what I had been feeling the first 2 weeks. My aunts 25th wedding anniversary happened, that was pretty fun. After that we went to a bunch of beautiful beaches, lakes and restaurants. It was great. I took a second trip to Las Terrenas and we stayed in a house over night, We went to the beach and rented a four-wheel to ride around the small town in it. The day before my birthday I went to visit a friend who was staying in DR that summer too and we got into a minor accident on our way back to the house, it was pretty funny because me an dmy cousin had been singign a brats song at the top of our lungs when it happened, but I was just glad to be ok. The day of my birthday my mom flew in from New York, we went to visit some family then I had a dinner that night. A few days later my dad flew in from New York. He took us to a bunch of different places, including race car driving. We also went to a hotel in Puerto Plata with about 50 employs that work for my grandfather. That was also really fun, I got insanely dark from the crazy caribean sun and gained like 3 pounds. The last week we got the sad news that my childhood neighbor had just ended her 5 year longer cancer battle and had passed. A lot of her family flew in, that I hadn't seen in a very long time and I was very happy to see them and they were happy to see me and my brother all grown up.It was so sad seeing her in that coffin, I cried my eyes out. This was the first summer I was actually satisfied with the time I spent there and was actually missing New York which was a first.
I had crazy summer full of unfortunate events, but the great memories I made definitely outnumbered them; believe it or not I cant wait to go back.
